After my week and a half hiatus which included installing a new graphics card and a quick trip out of town, I’m ready to get right back into editing the film. On the editing side, the film is at the halfway point in both length and story. Without giving too much away, this portion of the film is titled Side B. Most of the serious issues of being an independent artist (reasons for getting into it, technology, crossroads, etc..) will be recognized and discussed in this portion of the film.
I have a clear idea of where I want to begin this portion, but more importantly the ending of the film has already unfolded in my mind. Now it’s just a matter of getting there and portraying visually what I envisioned. I will attempt to create an emotional attachment between the audience and the story, getting as close as possible to offering a roller coaster effect from the film.
In a documentary of this nature I don’t see the film house attendees leaving in tears, but I would like them to leave having been impacted emotionally at whatever degree they allow themselves to reach. I can do this by being very precise with the choices I make creatively when it comes to commentary selection and music. Timing and presentation is key here.
To be completely honest, I really don’t know exactly what I’m doing until I do it when it comes to piecing the story together. It’s all intuitive to me. Meaning that I just follow the direction my heart is leading me. Ha, sort of like life… Unlike regular films where the story is scripted, documentaries are up to a certain point. I’m talking about the treatment of the film and if you have scenes that you are recreating. But for the most part, to my knowledge anyways, most documentaries aren’t done in this fashion.
So yeah I’m just going where the winds take me on this one. I’m trying not to get too caught up with having an overly aggressive, wordy, and one dimensional storyline. I want people to interpret the film for themselves, just as we interpret the various situations in our lives differently from one another. I want people to hate it. I want people to love it. I want people to say, “this doesn’t make any fuckin sense”. I also want people to say “this makes perfect sense!”
Anyways… I guess the moral of this blog is to trust your intuition and trust your heart. Don’t get caught up with too many details. You’ve heard this all before but it doesn’t hurt to be reminded. – M. Reyes
